I don't have it yet, but it's ordered. A Rainbow 388 EPO pattern plane:

This is a nice size model, what would be a ".40 size" if it had a glow engine. Wingspan is 54", and it's nearly 60" long. That means a big shipping box and $37 shipping, even from HK's USA warehouse! For power, I have an older Turnigy motor that formerly lofted my electrified Sig Kadet LT-25. If it doesn't have enough oomph, I'll order a Suppo 3520-06. Packs will be either a 4S2P A123 brick, or 4S 3200 lipos (whichever fits and suits the motor better). Another nice thing is that it uses standard size servos (of which I have many).

I plan to build in LEDs for night flight, and set this one up as my everyday "smooth" plane, night flyer, and touch-n-go shooter. Stay tuned here for more details! :)

What's with the little wing thing on the top?

From what I've read, it's there to help with some of the FAI pattern maneuvers. I'll be removing it, I think it looks dorky.

Chris,

I would leave it on at first. Get used to how the plane flies, then take it off and note the difference. I'm curious. Looks really nice. Rudder looks a little small.

You just want to laugh at my weird little T-wing thing. I know how you are.
Rudder may be small, but I guess we'll have to see. Also did you notice the wing has pockets molded in for retracts? Another decision to make there....

It looks like that photo was taken with a wide-angle lens, so I think you're just seeing fisheye distortion.

Pattern planes typically don't have really large rudders.

I think you are right. I looked at the pictures on Hobby King and the rudder is larger than I thought. Plenty big for pattern. I know it doesn't have to be as large as a 3d plane, but with some of the required maneuvers I would think it still needs quite a bit of area.

It's like the button on the head of a heli - it's there to stop the thing from spinning...
