on the subject of glassing the wings...

I have never covered anything with glass fibre, what sort or weight cloth do I need for covering the wings?
my local shop has several different weights and I have no idea. I would suspect the lightest would do the job, but I don't want to just jump in if it is going to be wrong...

the weights they list are - 2oz, 4oz, 6oz, 8oz and 9oz...

As I got some money from father xmas it looks like I am on for this project...

Yep, you want the lightest to use over the balsa surfaces.

Thanks Chris, as a total newbie to Glass fibre would I be better off stepping up to a 4oz cloth?
I am just wondering if the lighter stuff creases easily?
do you cover in sections like top bottom then Leading edge? or just do a top and bottom like when covering with film?

I bought the kit today, and some mg servos for the fuselage and a 300w motor so things are moving... I will use proper wing servos for the ailerons, but the prices are making me shudder a bit! I'll probably go for the cheapest hitec wing servos at £26 each. but I want to get the wing built as I can't remember how thick it is before covering. if I can get away with a standard mini metal gear servo I'll do that and save some money.

How are Hyperion servos priced over there? The DS09-AMD is popular among the DLG crowd, and are about $32.
The heavier cloth isn't really easier to work with, and will add too much weight. Best to stick to the 2 oz or even lighter if you can find it.

So I have made a start, I have bought some big carbon rod to replace the original spar. the original was about 4mm hollow tube, I have gone up to a 6mm OD solid rod, sliding into a 6mm ID carbon tube. I had to drill out the ribs to accommodate it but the result should be a fair bit stronger.

once I have the ribs set and the bottom panel on I'll see if there is anywhere else I can reinforce it, I wanted to make the spar go further into the wing but there is just not enough room in the rg15 foil to fit it with the 2-3 degrees of dihedral so I'll leave it the length it is.

the motor I got delivered is a 1200kv 450w affair so there should be plenty of shove.

do you think there would be any benefit in topping the ribs with carbon strips like you see in the high end gliders? I am not sure if they only do that to make them look pretty with clear film on them. I have also found some lighter glass cloth so I'll be getting some of that to cover the wing and tail feathers.

When I have something worth photographing I'll take some pictures.

Typically the carbon-capped ribs are only needed on the fully open wings. It functions in a similar manner to regular cap-strips, just maybe a bit stronger.

Here are the results of this evening, well result really...

I have taken some proper photos but for the sake of instant gratification here you go...

Notice the size of the front spar compared to the rear standard one. Both of these go into tubes concealed in the wing.






Hopefully I'll get time over the weekend to make the next wing, then is can have a play with fibreglassing in the week.

Taken with my DSLR so they are quite big, hence the picassa link.

I had to open out the nose a tiny bit to clear the motor, and I have been working on a design for an FPV add on which I will detail when I get it sorted.

next step sand and glass it.
