what do you guys think of adding a gyro in a sailplane?

I would like to put a spare gyro in my Radian Pro. Occasionally I use this powered glider to shoot HD aerial video. The camera has the ability to swivel 180 deg. I thought about putting the gyro on the ailerons to smooth out the video while I am circling above my target. My next adventure is to film Fannette island in the middle of Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe. Pyramid Lake was fun too!!

I don't see why it wouldn't work! I wonder if it'd be better on ailerons or rudder? Maybe both?
Great video! Mounting a camera on a flying machine sure does reveal how smoothly (or not) one flies, doesn't it?

The aileron idea wont work. My radian is setup for two aileron channels to enable camber and reflex. I might try the rudder ch and experiment with the gyro on there. rats!

Helidad,

Do you think it would work if you put a gyro on each aileron? Seems like it should. You can pick them up so cheap of the forums that it would be a fun experiment. I'm trying to think of a small, cheap one that works.

If you de-case the G401B "gyrd" it's pretty small and light. CNCHelicopter.com has them 4 for $49.99

I had one on my Ricco for a while, it actually worked pretty well. It's piezo-based, so it had some drift issues with temperature changes. When used in rate mode, that might not be an issue.

Why don't you make a gyro camera mount? I guess that would weigh too much, cause you'd need 3 more servos.

I installed a gyro on the ailerons on a Sig 1/4 scale Cub about 30 years ago! It was beautiful! The Cub wasn't twitchy by any means but the gyro damped all of the little wind puffs and made the flight look MUCH more realistic.

I ran one of these on my 450 for a while.

Pretty similar in performance to my gy401. And only $13

The KK quad copter boards can be flashed with airplane firmware for stabilization in all three axis. If you add a couple on board mixers, you can get crow as well
