After a trip to the field today to fly helicopters, I retreated to the air conditioning and got back to work on the Evolution-W.

First task was making shavings and dust by shaping down the pod. Very fun, and cathartic. I glued in the hatch, I'll lay up a fiberglass hatch over the pod after final shaping.

Next up: Covering!

I chose the 1.5 mil doculam for the horizontal. I may use the 3 mil on the vertical fin, but 1.5 on the rudder.

For color, I shot a light coat of flat black spray paint on the bottom of the stab and elevator. Before you scream "that's heavy" I weighed it before and after and it added less than a tenth of a gram, because my .1g resolution scale said it was the same before and after.

The color on the top is Rustoleum fluorescent color lightly misted on the inside of the doculam. It works fantastic! And I think it looks pretty good, if I do say so myself. 8-)

Onward!

Did you paint the doculam yourself or did it come that way?

I painted it, Ben. Just a light coat of Rustoleum on the adhesive side. Weird, but it works!

How is the doculam to use? Easier/harder than traditional film?

Looks great so far, giving me the itch to build something...

It's REALLY easy stuff to use! No backing to peel off, and it won't stick to itself. Seams also just vanish, especially on the thinner 1.5mil variety. Pretty neat. :)

I thought I'd update you guys with a few pictures of today's progress. Wings with servos, but without linkages, weigh 84g each. The wires are extra long, so that'll probably be a wash with the linkages weight-wise.

It's getting there! :)

JPC, you may want to take a look at the following threads on RCG which are great for using the Taranis with DLG.

Extremewing from RCG has a eepe file for the Taranis for DLG, here is a link to the thread: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2360212

If you have a vario, Nigel Sheffield has a LUA script that will announce your height after each launch: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2237421

They work awesome, I use them for my Blaster and Snipe.

BTW, so glad you all are back.

OK, the pic of you holding that up in the light is BA.

Thanks! And thanks for the Taranis links, I didn't have that one. I do have a vario, I just hadn't decided whether to use it or not. Might as well, as long as it fits. :)

OK, the construction is complete! Now I just need to hinge the ailerons and install the radio gear. I'm a bit nervous about the pull-spring tail setup, as I've never done that before. However, there are lots of helpful builders (and the designer of course) on the RCG thread, so I'm sure I'll manage.

Here are a few pics. :)
