I know it's been a long time, but I finally started building something! Back in 2015, before everything went nuts, I bought a Skybench Oly III kit with the electric fuselage option. It's been on a shelf ever since. :face

A few weeks ago I dusted it off and started assembling. I'm taking my time, just having fun, so this will take as long as it takes. There's something gratifying about seeing a big wing come together. Here are a few pics.

That's awesome Chris! I miss building with balsa, have kits set aside for "someday" too. When my dad got me into RC in about '81-82 we built two 2M gliders a Drifter 2 and a Soar Birdy. I've had the Soar Birdy kit for a few years, just found a Drufter kit a few months ago. Hope to build them both with my kids when the get a little older.

Are you going to build the electric version?

Thanks! It's been a lot of fun so far. I am indeed going to do the electric version, probably with one of the Turnigy Gliderdrive motors. I'd love to have a Neu setup in it, but really can't justify the cost of it.

The build is slowly coming along. You might have noticed in one of the previous photos that I added diagonals to the outer panel. I did this in an attempt to add torsional rigidity, since I'll be building the aileron version. Ailerons add more twisting loads to the wing than rudder-only of course, so it seemed prudent. After installing them, I still wasn't happy with it, so I went ahead and trimmed the ribs for cap strips. That added the rigidity I was looking for, so the diagonals were removed.

Sheeting was added, leading edges glued on and planed down. It's starting to look like a wing! I'll leave this one at this stage and start the other one next.

Looks great. What's the total span? Flaps along with ailerons?

It's 132", and yep I'm building it "full house" with flaps and ailerons. :)

I finally decided on a wingtip shape, since I'm incapable of building anything strictly to plans.
