I finally got the Sky High Hobby micro DLGs finished this weekend, and did some street tosses late yesterday afternoon:
The verdict? It's fun! But I wouldn't recommend you go buy one.
I had a terrible experience with the vendor / manufacturer. I ordered in March, and then forgot about it. Some time in May I remembered it hadn't arrived, and contacted the guy who told me he had issues getting materials. Gee, it would have been nice to get an email or something, but ok. I'll let that slide, and he told me my kits were ready and would ship "tomorrow". Fast forward another month, still no kits. And this time no replies to emails either. At this point it was even too late for a Paypal dispute, but I filed one anyway.
Guess what arrived a week after that, with no further correspondence? Yep, the kits. THREE MONTHS after ordering!
This thing is so darn simple, you can build something like it yourself from Dollar Tree foam board and a bit of carbon and balsa. I'm going to tinker with that idea, and if it works out I'll just put the details up on the website for everyone to give it a try.
It's funny, this morning just about sunrise I was tossing the micro DLG and it was being chased by dragonflies and other small insects. Yesterday at sunset a nighthawk made a dive at it.
The HK mini seems to get favorable reviews. Not sure where else to get a micro like this one, but honestly... it's so simple you can scratch build one in no time at all. You just need some carbon tube, carbon rods, and some balsa. I think the wings would be better made like a traditional balsa HLG (free flight style), as these foam wings are way too flappy. They flutter and kill the launch height if you put any power at all into the launch.
